J441: Final blog assignment-class reflection
In general, this course has been an eye-openingly interesting semester of discoveries and discussions. The conversational more than lecture style of the course really helped fuel discussions amongst classmates on topics of race, gender and diversity in the media. In some of these discussions I was surprised by what some people had to say on certain topics, usually by how honest they were in...
J441: "In Job Hunt, College Degree Can’t Close...
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/01/us/01race.html?_r=2
I think it’s truly sad that in our society today, a black person feels the need to hide attributes that give away his/her race, such as his/her name and involved organizations. But there is no doubt this article sheds truth on the reality out there. I think the biggest obstacle behind this problem is that white and black people are often...

The Unsung Founders Memorial
The Confederate Monument
The Unsung Founders Memorial located on the lawn of McCorkle Place in front of the Alumni building was created by Korean artist Do-Ho Suh. The memorial depicts 300 black figures holding up a polished table and honors the African-Americans—enslaved and free—who...

Procrastination
I should be studying for an exam I have in less than 8 hours and transcribing an hour-long interview, but instead I am posting this photo that I took last Thursday outside the UL. Autumn is in full-blown mode.

Mistakes in Typography Grate the Purists
This article reminded me of myself so much! Haha I totally am obsessed with fonts that I run into everyday. Key example? The water-conservation signs on the inside of the UNC bathroom doors. They say pull the lever up for #1 and down for #2. But the “#1” is slightly smaller than “#2.” A defect of Helvetica for sure. Check it out next time people! I swear it’s true!...
J441: Video Game Design
Traditionally women have been presented in the following roles: Damsels in Distress, Femme Fatales, or Buxom Babes:
“What remains to be seen is whether images of women, which in the past were nearly absent from virtual worlds, will evolve beyond what one game producer called “fantasy art wet dream material” (”Girl trouble, 1998, p. 99) and into strong, independent characters that are not trapped...
"God Thinks You're W☺nderful!"
“God Thinks You’re W☺nderful!” By Max Lucado
God is fond you. If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it. If He had a refrigerator, you picture would be on it. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning. Whenever you want to talk, He’ll listen. He can live anywhere in the universe, and He chose you heart. Face it friend.
He’s crazy about...

Using Customs from Other Cultures
Prompt: On October 8, self-help “guru” James Arthur Ray hosted a sweat lodge experience as part of his Spiritual Warrior retreat in Sedona, Arizona which resulted in three deaths and several injuries.
The “sweat lodge” which was covered with tarps and blankets was 2.5 feet high on the sides and 4.5 feet high in the center. It is estimated that between 55 and 65 people participated in the...
South Koreans Struggle With Race
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/02/world/asia/02race.html?_r=2&hp
An Indian man travels with a Korean female friend on a bus in Korea when racial and sexual slurs were thrown at them. It deals with a recent prosecution of a South Korean man with ‘discrimination’ for shouting racial slurs at the Indian man. It is extremely rare for such prosecution to take place in any part of the...
Hotel owner tells Hispanic workers to change names
By MELANIE DABOVICH, Associated Press Writer Melanie Dabovich, Associated Press Writer – 7 mins ago
TAOS, N.M. – Larry Whitten marched into this northern New Mexico town in late July on a mission: resurrect a failing hotel.
The tough-talking former Marine immediately laid down some new rules. Among them, he forbade the Hispanic workers at the run-down, Southwestern adobe-style hotel from...

Facing fears
I feel a bit strange blogging about this topic, but I figure no one really looks at my tumblr anyways, so here it goes…
On Tuesday, I entered singlehood for the first time in one year, seven months and 15 days. It was something I knew I had to do, but had been avoiding for a while. I started to realize that regardless of our relationship, we had developed a friendship and breaking up...
Another video from the same Steve V, creator of the below The Marshmallow Test video. He’s working for a church in Texas and this music video was so beautifully made. Very touching.

Should Undocumented Immigrants Count in the 2010...
This is in response to a blog post assignment for my J441 class (Diversity in the Media):
Should undocumented immigrants participate in the 2010 census? Why or why not?
I say definitely yes, undocumented immigrants should participate in the 2010 census. I think one of the biggest controversies over why undocumented immigrants should not participate in the census is because of distorted or the...

Emotional rollercoaster
Maybe it’s just the weather is affecting my mood, but it’s been an emotional past few days. I don’t know why I let my feelings get the best of me. I’ve always been jealous of those people who can compartmentalize their feelings and simply repress and move on with their lives. Why can’t I do that? The weather and currently my mood reminds me of the raining days in New...
New to tumblr.
Thanks to the persistence of a friend (jennifery), I have joined tumblr. So far, so good. The themes look great and the interface is pretty friendly. :) I’m excited about starting fresh from my previous Wordpress blog. Hopefully I will be able to stay more committed! I have gone ahead and set this blog to the URL of www.ispycandy.com. So hopefully that should be easier to remember…
