Should Undocumented Immigrants Count in the 2010 Census?
This is in response to a blog post assignment for my J441 class (Diversity in the Media):
Should undocumented immigrants participate in the 2010 census? Why or why not?
I say definitely yes, undocumented immigrants should participate in the 2010 census. I think one of the biggest controversies over why undocumented immigrants should not participate in the census is because of distorted or the “malapportionment of Congress.” However, I think beyond that one issue, the overarching purpose behind a census is to collect an accurate record of human demographics, regardless of undocumented, illegal, alien immigrants. Even non-voters such as children and ex-felons are counted and considered in the census, so I don’t see why undocumented immigrants should be treated any differently. Ultimately, the census accounts for all the members of a population and all the people in America are human beings worthy of being counted.
